In Memoriam
Please join CIRES virtually on Wednesday, Sept. 16, to celebrate Konrad Steffen life and contributions. Koni served as CIRES' director from 2005–12 and was a member of the geography department faculty.
Konrad (Koni) Steffen always had a smile and a kind word to say–to another scientist, a staff member, to the graduate student of a colleague. And it seemed, at times, like he could do anything: brief Congress, ford a meltwater river on a snowmachine, mesmerize journalists with tales of his time on the ice.
Betty Hoover–a longtime and famed Buff superfan along with her twin sister–passed away, leaving what will surely be a palpable absence in the community and at CU athletic events. For many years, she devotedly attended countless games, Homecoming and other gatherings.
Longtime professor Uriel Nauenberg, widely recognized for his work in high-energy physics and legendary as a teacher of undergraduate students, died on Dec. 31, 2019. He was 81.
The university is remembering Carol B. Lynch for her academic achievement and commitment to graduate education. A memorial service will be held on Sept. 7 in Boulder.
Professor Emeritus Phil Solomon passed away on April 20. The Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts, his lifelong academic home, is hosting a
film screening honoring his life and work.
The warm, compassionate and talented Zachary Owens, an Honors Program faculty member, passed away in July 2018. Join a campus celebration of his life on Nov. 9.
Harrison died peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 2 after a four-month battle with pancreatic cancer. CIRES will soon announce a way to honor his considerable scientific and leadership legacy.
Longtime ÀϾÅÆ·²è faculty-member, politician and former University of Colorado President John Buechner passed away Saturday.
