The field of political science has slowly gained an appreciation for their use in recent years; however, using meta-analyses in dissertations remains rare. This is puzzling, given the tool ability to map a topic, to highlight potential gaps for future research to address, and its long-lasting utility for researchers in future projects. We argue that for these and several other reasons, graduate students should consider including a meta-analysis in their dissertation. This article discusses these advantages in detail and offers advice on how to conduct a meta-analysis based on several interviews and applied examples. We contend that instructors can leverage GAI to assist them in quickly creating and implementing classroom-based simulation activities and demonstrations. In college, I always read the "suggested readings", and would email the professor with news articles relevant to the topic we were studying. Today, I listen to the audio edition of the Economist every week when I run.”</p><p>In undergrad, Philips’ attraction to knowledge meant that he had many interests before he settled on political science. “I started off in engineering, which I liked, but I also enjoyed economics and history. After a while I wanted to change majors, so I sat in on a political science class taught by a well-known professor,” he said, “I was hooked.” </p><div class="align-right image_style-medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/polisci/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/article-image/andy_philips.jpg?itok=z6fGjeB5" width="750" height="930" alt="Philips"> </div> </div> <p>It was after taking multiple classes in political science that he decided to go to graduate school. “I knew I wanted to peruse a Ph.D in political science when we started to read actual quantitative articles done by scholars in a Senior undergraduate seminar.”</p><p>Now that Philips has a Ph D, he has continued to concentrate on political science methodology. “My research involves creating new methods or applying existing ones to problems that political scientists care about.”</p><p>“Substantively, I am interested in a number of topics, such as the manipulation of budgets before elections in order to win re-election, how and when governments decide to re-allocate their budgets, and the factors that affect inequality across multiple income groups.”</p><p>Working in academia is attractive to Philips because “as a professor, you don’t really have a boss and there are very few other fields where you have this amount of freedom.”</p><p>Along with the independence that comes with being a professor, Philips finds it “fun to teach students, especially when they take in the material and it is extremely rewarding to see your name on papers and books.”</p><p>His favorite class to teach so far is PSCI 7155: Maximum Likelihood. “It is a graduate class with a great group of students. I propose using the autoregressive distributed lag model and bounds cointegration test as an approach to dealingwith some of themost commonly encountered issues in time-series analysis. Through Monte Carlo experiments, I show that this procedure performs better than existing cointegration tests under a variety of situations. I illustrate how to implement this strategy with two step-bystep replication examples. In this contribution, we bring together a theoretical framework that focuses on the influence of globalizing forces on government policy decisions with a methodological emphasis on explaining dynamic budgetary trade-offs. While comparative public policy and budgetary scholars typically have focused on entire budgets or amounts spent on specific policies, we look at the political priorities embedded in budgets by modeling the budget as a pie. Then, we theorize about how governments respond to external shocks by altering the allocations to the various policy areas.
