Guide: Backing Up Photos and Messages on iOS

This document provides step-by-step instructions for backing up text messages using iCloud and photos/videos using OneDrive on iOS devices.

Before you begin:

To ensure a smooth backup process, confirm that you know your iCloud password or reset it if necessary.

Section 1: Back Up Photos and Videos with OneDrive

Requirements

  • Microsoft OneDrive app installed
  • Work or School account (identikey@colorado.edu)
  • Microsoft Authenticator for validation

Steps

  1. Download and Sign In
    • Download Microsoft OneDrive from the App Store.
    • Sign in using identikey@colorado.edu and select Work or School OneDrive.
    • Enter your password and validate it with Authenticator.
  2. Configure Initial Settings
    • When prompted under Keep Up with File Changes, choose your preferred option (recommended: Later).
    • Tap the profile icon to open Settings.
  3. Enable Camera Backup
    • In Settings, select Camera Backup.
    • Choose your OneDrive account (identikey@colorado.edu).
    • Enable Include Videos if desired.
    • Once your pictures are backed up, they will be available on your computer in OneDrive or the OneDrive app.
    • Open app, select media tab
  4. Delete phone back-up to free up space in iCloud

Accessing Backed-Up Photos

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Go to User profile (Where your name is at the very top)
  • Click on iCloud
  • Scroll down to iCloud back up
  • Turn off "Back up to this iPhone鈥
    • Under All devices select the phone and Turn Off and Delete from iCloud
  • Go to back to iPhone settings
  • Click on Storage
  • iCloud Photos
  • Turn off
  • Sync this iPhone
  • This will free up space for your iCloud back up

Section 2: Back Up Text Messages and Contacts with iCloud

Requirements

  • Active Apple ID account
  • Wi-Fi connection and sufficient iCloud storage
  1. Sign In to Apple Account
    • Open Settings on your iPhone.
    • Sign in with your Apple ID (recommended: identikey@colorado.edu).
    • If you do not have an Apple ID:
      • On a computer, visit https://appleid.apple.com.
      • Create a new account following the prompts.
  2. Enable iCloud for Messages
    • In Settings, select iCloud.
    • Locate Messages and toggle Use on This iPhone to ON.
  3. Sync Messages
    • Tap Sync Now to begin backing up your messages to iCloud.

Go to iCloud, make sure messages are turned messages on

Contact back up

iCloud, Messages

Make sure sync is turned on

Contacts and messages are on

Notes:

  • Keep your device connected to Wi-Fi during the sync process.
  • Ensure you have enough iCloud storage for message data.
