An upcoming webinar that may be of interest to students considering intensive language study in Southeast Asia is taking place this coming Wednesday! See below for more details:

The Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SEAFLI) is a fully funded program of the Boren Awards sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO). These programs are open to undergraduate Boren Scholars and graduate Boren Fellows and offer intensive language training in Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian.

SEAFLI programs include:

· Language and Cultural immersion programs during the summer (domestic) and fall (overseas) that award academic credit from the University of Wisconsin-Madison

· Coursework tailored to all levels, including beginners

· Opportunities to achieve rapid proficiency gains in languages highly sought-after in the federal workforce

· Optional spring funding for self-designed language study and research or internships

The Executive Committee of the Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ) invites proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers for the 2026 ASCJ Conference. The conference will be held at Sophia University on Saturday and Sunday, 4–5 July 2026.

As in past years, all presentations must be delivered in English. Proposals may be submitted online from 1 September and 31 October 2025. Results will be announced by late December 2025.

Starting this year, the Executive Committee is implementing changes to the online panel and roundtable proposal entry forms and to the conference's session format guidelines. Prospective organizers should carefully review the details on the “Proposal Submission Form” page (https://ascjapan.org/conference/call-for-papers/) before finalizing their proposals.

Submission Categories:

1. The ASCJ Executive Committee has added a new “Discipline” entry field to the Panel and Individual Paper forms to facilitate processing of submissions for internal review. The Executive Committee realizes that some proposals may be multi-disciplinary in nature. Therefore, while organizers are asked to indicate only one “Discipline,” this will not influence the evaluation of your proposal.

The disciplines are: “Religion and Intellectual History”; “Literature”; “Art, Culture, and Media”; “History”; “Politics and Economics; Other”; and “Sociology and Anthropology.”

Panels (max. 5 participants): 1 chair; 3–4 presenters; (and preferably) 1 discussant. Each abstract has a maximum of 250 words (both the session abstract and each paper abstract). The chair may also serve as a presenter or discussant.

Roundtables (max. 5 participants): 1 chair; 3 to 5 discussants. Roundtable proposal applications should include an abstract of a maximum of 350 words that includes each discussant position on the topic being discussed. (While one role per participant is strongly preferred, the chair may also serve as a roundtable speaker if necessary; in such a case, there must be at least 4 roundtable speakers.)

Individual Papers: paper title, an abstract no longer than 250 words, and the name(s) of the presenters. While any person may submit a proposal for an Individual Paper presentation, a strong preference is given to those submitted by advanced graduate students or those who have completed their PhDs within the last two to three years.

2. The ASCJ Executive Committee will adopt “two appearances/one paper rule” as follows:

a. A participant may serve as chair of up to two organized panels or roundtables.

b. A participant may serve as a discussant on up to two organized panels or roundtables.

c. A participant may chair one session and be a discussant in another.

d. Each participant may present in only one organized panel or individual paper session.

The Executive Committee asks the organizer of each panel or roundtable proposal to inform their prospective participants of these conditions prior to submitting their proposal. Participants are expected to limit their panel or roundtable commitments to meet these conditions.

3. Each session will have a new time limit of 90 minutes. (Previous conferences allowed 120 minutes.) Panel and roundtable organizers must consider this time frame when finalizing the number of participants for their submission.

Since 2014, the ASCJ has awarded the Linda Grove Graduate Paper Prize. For details on this competition, please see the “Conference” section of the ASCJ website. To be considered for this prize, a student must be enrolled in a degree program at a Japanese university and be accepted as a presenter at the ASCJ 2026 Conference. The deadline for submission of the completed paper is 15 June 2026. The winner will be announced at the time of the keynote lecture.

Applications are officially open for the 19th Korea–America Student Conference (KASC 19) — a three-week academic and cultural exchange connecting college students from Korea and the United States.

Next summer, delegates will travel from San Francisco to New Orleans to Washington, D.C., exploring this year theme: Navigating the Future of the Korean–American Relationship in a Fracturing Global Landscape.

This award honors outstanding K-12 Chinese language teachers who have made significant contributions to their students and communities through the teaching of Chinese language and culture.

The Honors Program invites you and your students to join us for our biannual Distinguished Lecture Series event on Monday, November 3rd from 5:30-6:30pm in Eaton Humanities, room 250.

We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Jennifer Ho will be our featured speaker this semester. In her talk, "Joy as Resistance in Fascist Authoritarian Times or Why I Am an Anti-Racism Advocate,” Dr. Ho will discuss how joy can serve as a powerful form of resistance to the exhaustion caused by fascist authoritarianism, sharing her personal journey into anti-racism and the transformative role joy plays in sustaining her resistance and advocacy.

The daughter of a refugee father from China and an immigrant mother from Jamaica, whose parents themselves were immigrants from Hong Kong, Jennifer Ho is the director of the Center for Humanities & the Arts and Professor of Ethnic Studies at the �Ͼ�Ʒ��, where she specializes in Asian American literary and cultural studies and Critical Race Theory. She is past president of the Association for Asian American Studies (2020-2022), the editor of four essay collections, the author of three scholarly monographs and a number of essays and articles, both research oriented and public facing. In addition to her academic work, Ho is active in community engagement around issues of race and intersectionality.

Arrive at 5pm for a seat and a slice of pizza! The talk will start at 5:30pm. No RSVP is required, and everyone including community partners outside of CU are welcome to attend.

Upcoming online conference hosted by the Royal Society for Asian Affairs, in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Association and the International Institute for Asian Studies.

The conference will consist of six panel discussions across the 6th & 7th November that will explore US policy towards Asia one year into the second Trump presidency. The panels will focus, respectively, on China, India and South Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia and will consist of a broad range of experts and specialists.

This presentation explores how people build a sense of place and community in the development zones and corridors that have become focal sites of Chinese investment in Southeast Asia.

It develops a concept of ‘new hinterlands’ to describe and analyse infrastructure spaces like Thailand Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Here, infrastructural reconfigurations of space produce a new kind of hinterland, one where life is often suspended somewhere between the rural and urban, between the agricultural and industrial, and between the past and the future.

In the new hinterlands, livelihoods subsist and ‘make do’ with the uncertain and temporary opportunities eked out at the margins of global supply chains. The EEC geography of ambition is a landscape caught in a limbo between connectivity and abandonment, development and dispossession.

Broadly, this presentation asks: within these spaces meant to facilitate movement, how do connective infrastructures produce interstitial and contingent landscapes of settling? How do people ‘make do’ and forge places of belonging, identity, and care in a space that has been designed to literally pass them by?

Tim Oakes is Professor of Geography at the �Ͼ�Ʒ��. From 2012 to 2023 he was Director of the Colorado Center for Asian Studies, and from 2018 to 2023 he was Project Director of China Made, an international research collective focusing on China infrastructure-driven model of export development, funded by The Henry Luce Foundation.

He has published extensively on the cultural and political effects of rural and urban development in China, cultural governance, tourism and heritage development, and most recently, infrastructural urbanism. Recent visiting faculty positions have included the National University of Singapore, University of Oslo, University of Hong Kong, Wageningen University, and Guizhou Minzu University. His current book project, forthcoming 2026, is Living in Nuclear Asia: Sociotechnical Perspectives on Nuclear Power Development, Risk, and Vulnerability (University of Toronto).
